According to UNICEF, there is a perception among employers that school does not prepare students for the job market, leading to approximately 60% of students dropping out by the age of 16 and only 25% of dropouts undertaking vocational training.
The 2017 Sri Lanka Labour Demand Survey sought to determine gaps between the education system and the skills which are in-demand across the country. Of the 3500 employers included in the survey, 44% indicated that employees who were hired immediately after secondary school lacked job-specific skills including teamwork, problem-solving and IT competencies. 20% of employers also indicated that workers who had completed secondary school and technical/vocational training lacked maturity and work/life experience. Another key finding showed that 17% of employers believed that first-job seekers who had completed a university or higher education degree had poor attitudes, work ethic and motivation. |
